In 2009 Clemente executes, on purpose for this exhibition, a series of maps entitled In meiner heimat, “in my homeland”, where by homeland he means not only his native country but above all an imaginary territory. It is a collection of ten geographic maps executed using the collage technique, which reconstruct ideal countries and cities, plausible though nonexistent topographies. Non-places that, rather than inhabiting the space, live in the fluid and stratified time of memory, which moves between forgetfulness and memory, imagination and quotation. Just like Clemente’s art moves freely between abstraction and figuration, past and present, opposed and contrary elements, looking for a confrontation with “the other” – the different, the stranger, the foreigner – in which one can continuously get lost and find oneself, like in a sweet shipwreck.
